As with the Hydra of Ancient Greece, the beheading of the once popular Napster file-sharing service has given rise to a multi-headed beast. Intent on preserving our cyber-freedoms, the Internet community has coalesced around a new technology: the p2p (peer-to-peer) network architecture. The challenge has been to design less vulnerable, more decentralised networks capable of withstanding attacks from ligitious organisations like the RIAA, or from legislation by accomplice governments seeking to destroy our liberties. But the tradeoffs between decentralisation and performance have proven difficult. Additionally, while certain networks may perform better than the traffic-intensive Gnutella, they suffer from being closed-source solutions.
memiki has benefited from the experience of others' efforts and today offers a faster, less vulnerable and easier-to-use solution. In addition, memiki is made available as an open-source project, thus guaranteeing that it can never be taken away from the Internet community.
In brief, memiki is free and fast, open-source, includes no spyware, pushes no advertising on users, and generally kicks ass.
